FAQs

For Prescribers

  • Yes. Any doctor can prescribe a medicinal cannabis product for their patient, if they believe it is clinically appropriate to do so.

Prescribing doctors must hold Federal (and in some cases, state or territory) approvals before a patient’s prescription can be issued.

Prescribing doctors should have appropriate qualifications and/or expertise to treat the condition for which the proposed product would be used. If the doctor is not a specialist in the condition, the TGA may ask for a report from the appropriate treating specialist.

  • No, you do not! There are two key pathways for patients to access prescriptions via a medical professional.

As a medical practitioner, you can apply to access unapproved products to:

    • individual patients on a case-by-case basis through the Special Access Scheme

    • multiple patients with the same condition as an Authorised Prescriber.
